Book Tip: Slovenia

Its history from the beginnings to the present

As with the other new states of Eastern Europe a considerable number of questions also arise in relation to the "EU model student": how did the Slavs come to the Alpine-Adriatic region, how were they Christianised, what kind of rulership structures did they belong to, with which other peoples did they live together? How did the Slovene language develop? How did the national differentiation between Germans and Slovenes arise, how did the federation with the Croats and Serbs in two very different states come about? How did the Slovenes experience the Second World War? How was independence achieved in 1991? What is Slovenia's balance as an independent state so far? This presentation is accompanied by illustrations, a chronology, and short biographies, as well as references to historic places and sights.

Joachim Hösler is lecturer for Eastern European History at the Philipps University Marburg.
