Retrospective
On 23 September is the 70th birthday of Rosemarie Albach, alias Romy Schneider. Known as the sweet Viennese girl and charming teenager in numerous film versions of Austrian and German post war production (DIE DEUTSCHMEISTER, FEUERWERK, MONPTI), she succeeded in emancipating herself from the image of the eternal princess (MÄDCHENJAHRE EINER KÖNIGIN, SISSI).
Border crossing was henceforward in the center of her activity. First nude scenes, murderesses, prostitutes, incestuous mothers, but also independent women and political combatants were part of her repertoire (BOCCACIO ’70, INZEST, UNE HISTOIRE SIMPLE). In the German speaking area she was not forgiven all her life the break with the sanctimonious, reactionary post war film. Particularly her political anti-nazi films (LE TRAIN, THE CARDINAL) were to be understood as a protest against a war generation overready to forget. Today she is celebrated as a star of three nations. In France she found a new artistic home and was awarded best French actress several times.
The so far most extensive retrospective concerning the international production of the artist is presenting German speaking, French, Italian, British and American productions in the respective original versions. Outstanding productions such as LE COMBAT DANS L’ÎLE (DER KAMPF AUF DER INSEL), LE VIEUX FUSIL (DAS ALTE GEWEHR/ABSCHIED IN DER NACHT) or L’IMPORTANT C’EST D’AIMER (NACHTBLENDE) will be shown in their French original version in Austria for the first time.
